How email validation works

Email validation can mean two different levels of confidence: screening technical risk signals or checking an individual mailbox through a verification provider.

Modern email validation platforms look at far more than simple formatting. Infrastructure quality, authentication records, domain behavior, typo detection, and mailbox patterns all contribute to overall confidence.

Syntax validation

The first step checks whether an email address follows proper formatting rules. Invalid characters or missing symbols can immediately make an address undeliverable.

MX record analysis

MX records tell providers where incoming mail should be delivered. Domains without valid MX records may not be configured to receive messages correctly.

Authentication checks

SPF, DKIM, and DMARC records help establish trust between sending and receiving mail providers. Missing or weak authentication can contribute to spam filtering and lower deliverability confidence.

Confidence scoring

Many modern tools now rely on confidence scoring instead of simple pass or fail responses. This provides a more realistic picture of potential risk before sending campaigns.
